What's the best way to set up office furniture?

Office desks

  1. The only way to set up office furniture is to draw a space plan of the office so the furniture fits aesthetically within the room.
  2. You can adjust the size of the desks and storage to fit your office space to suit the amount of staff you have.
  3. Please remember to leave at least 100 cm from the edge of the desk to the wall behind.

Office storage:

  1. The office storage might take a bit more consideration. Any power sockets, heaters and pillars should be added to the plan so the storage can be arrange around these.
  2. Please make sure any storage is not placed near any heaters because this will damage the furniture and can cause a fire risk.
  3. Place the office storage close to the people who need it and consider what needs to be inside.
  4. Does the user need storage for box files, hanging files or media storage.
  5. Some cabinets are designed to hold coats and bags so these should also be added in.

What furniture is needed for an office?

  • Office areas: For the main office you only need two items for a functional office and these are desks with cable management and desk chairs. You can add storage in but in today's world this is not usually necessary.
  • Reception areas: An office reception area should include a reception desk or counter with matching chairs and sofas in your brand colours. Add a coffee table in if you have magazines etc.
  • Meeting areas: Meeting rooms come in many different sizes so you can choose between round, oval and rectangular meeting tables. Add in a console or storage for tea and coffee or media equipment.
  • Breakout areas: Break rooms or staff cafeterias should include stylish cafe tables and chairs plus soft seating and tables. Divide these areas up with fabric screens to create areas with a bit more privacy.

What is ergonomic office furniture?

Ergonomic office furniture should be adjustable and movable to the users individual height and shape.

For example an ergonomic office chair should have the following features: adjustable height, adjustable armrests, adjustable lumbar support and adjustable back tilt.

How do I choose the right office desk?

There are three main types of office desk:

  1. Smaller desk: For laptop usage used by part time or contractors. These desk are usually 100-120 cm in width and 60-70 cm in depth.
  2. Desk for use all day: For full time employees and workers. Large enough to hold a large screen and full size keyboard with room for under-desk drawers. these desks need to be between 140 and 160 cm in width and 80 cm in depth. If the depth is any narrower the screen will be too close to the user.
  3. Large corner desk: is more suitable for administration employees who need more room for paperwork, storage and other office accessories. These desks need to be a minimum of 160 cm in width and the return can be anything from 120 to 160 cm. The depth of the return is usually thinner at around 40-60 cm.

Note: always leave a space of 100 cm between the edge of the desk and the wall behind.
